The purpose of the study was to examine the practices of government secondary schoolrnprincipalsâ€™ leadership in Yeka Sub City Addis Ababa. The study employed descriptive surveyrnmethod and was conducted in six secondary schools. To collect the relevant data questionnaire,rninterview and document analysis were used during the study. Data was gathered from 144rnteachers, 17school principals, 4 supervisors and 6 Yeka Sub City education officers and werernanalyzing using five rating scales and mean. The participants of the study were selectedrnconveniently based on their responsibility. The review of literature focused on leadership inrneducation within this concept, the concept of leadership, theoretical background of leadership,rnleadership styles, leadership skills of leaders and managerial functions of school leadership.rnDescriptive survey method was supported by qualitative study that was employed to study the practices .rnTo collect the relevant data questionnaire of both closed and open ended questions were used. Interviewrnand document analysis were conducted during the study. Accordingly, questionnaire was preparedrnto be filled by teachers and interviews were administered for Sub City education officers,rnprincipals, vice principals and supervisors. The data obtained through questionnaires werernanalyzed using statistical tool such as mean. On the basis of this findings principals are lessrneffective in their leadership due to lack of experience and qualification in the profession.rnFinally, based on the findings and conclusions, recommendations were made on capacityrnbuilding and empowering of principals to do their work effectively, in turn, encouragingrnparticipatory approach of leadership. Furthermore, Addis Ababa Education Bureau isrnviiresponsible to give directives and guidelines in the case that whenever shortcomings andrngaps are observed and the schools should organized public relations to create school-rncommunity links.
