The Role Of Counseling In Improving Students Disciplinary Problems The Case Of Some Selected High Schools Of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-city Addis Ababa. Asfaw Girm Athesis Submitted To The Department
The main purpose of this research was to investigate the role of counseling inrnimproving students’ disciplinary problems in selected secondary school in Nifas silkrnlafto sub-city,Addis Ababa. The study adopted a mixed method for data collection andrndata analysis. Target population was 393 which comprised of 358 students, 12rnprincipals, 20 teachers and 3 school counselor all drawn from 3 schools. Stratifiedrnrandom sampling technique was used to select the 358 students and 20 teachers.rnAvailability sampling was used to select Principals’ and school counselor.rnQuestionnaire and interview schedule were used to collect data. The data collectedrnthrough questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies andrnpercentages). Data collected using interview schedule were transcribed andrnorganized into themes, categories and sub-categories as they emerged from the data.rnThe study concluded that counseling services didn’t adequately contribute tornstudents’ disciplinary problems as a result of inadequate facilities, high teachers’rnwork load, lack of counseling rooms/office and lack of cooperation among staffrnmember for providing counseling services were being used in schools. Punishmentsrnespecially corporal and physical punishment was widely used to solve disciplinaryrncases in all school. The study recommended that effective counseling servicernprograms should be put in place as essential parts of schools by the schoolrnadministrators to improve student discipline and school administrators and board ofrnmanagement to take counseling services in their schools seriously by ensuringrnadequate budgetary allocation and provision of necessary facilities
