The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between emerging adults’ perceived parenting style of their parents and their marital attitude among graduate students in Addis Ababa University. To achieve the objectives of the study, correlational research design was employed. The data about demographic characteristics, marital attitude and parenting styles were collected through self-report questionnaires from a sample of 320 (182 male and 138 females) graduate first year and second year students selected through availability sampling from different colleges of AAU. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to make meaning out of the collected data. The findings revealed that 32.8% of emerging adults perceive their parents parenting style as authoritative and 31.9%, 19.4% &15.9% emerging adults also perceived parents parenting style as neglectful, authoritarian and indulgent respectively. There was significant difference in emerging adults’ perception of their parents parenting style across gender, age and parental marital status, while there was no significant difference among emerging adults perception across income, work experience, and year kevel of emerging adults. Regarding marital attitude, 51.9% of emerging adults’ have positive attitude towards marriage, but 48.1% of emerging adults have negative attitude towards marriage. There was also significant difference on emerging adults’ marital attitude across emerging adults’ perceived parenting style of their parents. Partly, emerging adults who perceive their parents parenting as authoritative type of parenting have positive attitude towards marriage, while, those emerging adults who perceive their parents parenting styles as authoritarian, indulgent and neglectful type of parenting have negative attitudes towards marriage. There was significant difference on emerging adults’ marital attitude across gender, income level, work experience and parental marital status, but there was no significant difference in marital attitude across, age, and year level. Pearson correlation result shows that strong positive and significant relationship between parenting styles and marital attitude(r=.57). Authoritative parenting style has positive, moderate and significant relationship with marital attitude, indulgent parenting style have weak, positive but insignificant relationship with marital attitude, neglectful parenting style has moderate, significant but negative relationship with marital attitude and finally authoritarian parenting style have negative, weak and insignificant relationship with marital attitude. Authoritative neglectful parenting styles are found to be significant positive and negative predictors of emerging adults’ marital attitude respectively.
