A Study Of Association Between Abo Blood Group And Pre- Eclampsia Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care Unit At Axum Referral Hospital Axum Ethiopia 2019.
Background: Pre-eclampsia remains a major cause of prenatal morbidity and mortalityworldwide. WHO estimated the incidence of pre-elcampsia to be 2.8% in developing countriesand 0.4% in developed countries. Overall, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia accounts for 10%–15%of maternal deaths. Early identification of pregnant women at risk for pre-eclampsia is a priorityto implement preventive measures. rnObjective: To assess the association between maternal ABO blood group and pre-eclampsia inrnAxum referral hospital.rnMethods: Fifty four pregnant women, who fulfill the criteria for pre-eclampsia were selected asrncases and 54 women with normal pregnancy without any complications, were selected asrncontrols. Odd ratio was calculated to find the correlation of the patients with pre-eclampsia andrnnormotensive group from the point of ABO blood groups.rnResults: Of the women who developed pre-eclampsia, 29.6% had type O blood group, 42.6%had type A blood group, 14.8% had type B blood group, and 13% had type AB blood group, rnwhereas those of normotensive group (healthy donors) had 31.3%, 44.5%, 16.7%, and 7.5%,respectively. There was a significant difference between patients with pre-eclampsia andrnnormotensive group in terms of distribution of ABO blood groups and the percentage of groupAB was found to be higher in patients with pre-eclampsia compared to the normotensive group(P=0.029). rnConclusions: Pregnant women with AB blood type have the highest, and O blood type havelowest risk for pre-eclampsia among the ABO blood groups
