This study was conducted with the general objective to assess the disparities in household foodrnsecurity between the indigenous people and resettlers living in Asossa Woreda of BenishangulGumuzrnI~ egion . For this study, two contiguous rural kebeles (Ura kebele inhabited by thernindigenous people and A mba 1 kebele inhabited by reset/lers) were purposively selected, and arntotal of 105 sample households proportionately 51 and 54 sample households were selected, rnrespectively.Fom Ura and Amba I using systematic random sampling technique. Primary datarnwas generated through structured household survey questionnaire, FGDs, key informantrninterviews and direct observations. Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFJAS)rndeveloped by FANTA project was used a measurement tool for food security status. Bothrnqualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques were used. For the quantitative data, rndescriptive statistics, such as frequency, mean, standard deviation and cross-tabulations werernwidely used. The study result revealed that 69.5 % of the total sample households were foodrninsecure with different levels of severity (26.7 % mildly food insecure, 25.7 % moderately foodrninsecure and 17.1 % severely food insecure). Only 30.5% of the households were found to bernfood secure. With this indicator, the percentage of food insecure households of the indigenousrnand reset/lers were 66.7% and 72. 7 % respectively, showing that sample households ofrnreset/lers were more likely to be food insecure than that of the indigenous people. Althoughrnthere are disparities in food security status between the sample households of the indigenousrnand reset/lers, the t-test didn't confirm the presence of statistically significant differencernbetween the two groups of households in terms of food security status. Explanations for therncauses of food insecurity and disparities were made form the perspectives of households'rnassets; activities and strategies; institutions, organization and social relations; andrnvulnerability context. The study findings suggest that in ensuring food security, strategies andrninterventions shouldfoeus on the general livelihoods of the households.
