In this paper interbirth interval in rural community ofrnEthiopia was considered. The aim was to study the distribution ofrnthis variable and to see if it varies across regions and sociorneconomic groups. The data for the study was obtained from a sociorndemographic multipurpose survey conducted in rural Ethiopia inrn1989 and 1990. The approach of the study was to fit probabilityrndensity functions and then generate probabilities so that relaternthis probabilities to fertility rates and levels.rnWhile none of the densities fitted perfectly to eachrnconsecutive birth interval, the lognormal distribution was foundrnto be relatively better for the first and second intervals. Arnwider mean first birth interval was observed in Northwest and arnrelatively smaller one in south, indicating a relatively highrnfertility rate in the Southern region.rnFor lower parities, interval length of 1.45-2.45 years wasrnobserved as a most probable interval length and this shifts torn.45-1.45 years at higher parities. For a given interval lengthrnand birth order, probability of having a child is higher in southrnand smaller in Northwest, indicating a relatively high fertilityrnin South and a lower one in the Northwestern region.rnIn a final consideration of family size, education, sex ofrnthe first two children in a family and religion, there was nornsignificant difference observed in birth interval pattern inrndifferent regions of the country
