The purpose of this study was to find out the extent tornwhich social and pedagogic factors influence the participationrnbehaviours of (i) AAU freshman students in general; and (ii)rnrelatively 'high', 'average' and 'low' classroom participatorsrnin particular. The sample population of the study were 180 AAUrnfreshman students at the main and Arat Kilo campuses. Out ofrnthe 180 students fifteen students were selected randomly from arnsection and were described as 'high', 'average' and 'low'rnparticipators based on their measures of participationrncalculated from an analysis of lesson transcripts from videornrecordings.rnTo obtain the necessary information, a questionnaire withrnthirty items was administered to the students in the studyrnsample. The questionnaire consisted of 3 categories which aimedrnto find out the influences of (i) social factors; (ii ) pedagogicrnfactors; and (iii) mixed social and pedagogic factors onrnstudents' participation behaviours. An interview was alsornconducted to obtain further information which could eitherrnconsolidate or refute the information revealed through thernquestionnaire.rnThe analysis of the students' :::-esponses to thernquestionnaire and the revelations brou5~~ O ~= by ~he interviewrnseemed to indicate that both s ocial ana ~e~agcg~c :ao=ors havernpositive influences on the participa~ion oer.avlours of thernmajority of the students. Moreover, the pcs~tive influences ofrnpedagogic factors were found to be greater than the positiverninfluences of social fact ors. The negative influences of bothrnsocial and pedagogic factors were reported by below 50% of thernstudents. This study has also showed that the participationrnbehaviours of the majority of the students were influenced byrnthe mixed social and pedagogic factors.rnAn attempt was also made to compare the extent to whichrnsocial and pedagogic factors influence the participationrnbehaviours of relatively 'high' , 'average' a::d 'low'rnparticipators. The study showed that there was no significantrndifference between the influences of s ocial and pedagogicrnfactors for the 'high' and 'average' ~art~oiFa= o rs. Eowever'rnPedagogic factors were found to have greater i ::: l~ences on thernparticipation behaviours of 'low' participa~ors.
