The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles ofrnteachers and learners in relation to the introduction of the newrnFreshman English materials. The study involved 180 students andrn19 teachers from two campuses. Of the 19 sections chosen by thernproject committee for the piloting of the new materials 6rnsections were involved in this study: three from Sidist Kilo andrnthree from Arat Kilo campuses. All the 19 teachers who werernteaching the new materials were involved in the study.rnThe major instruments used in this study werernquestionnaires and an interview. One questionnaire whichrnattempted to find out students' previous perceptions of arnteacher's role, students' preferences for ways of learning,rnstudents' assessment of the new modes of organization and therntasks in the new materials, was designed for and administered tornstudents in the study sample. Another questionnaire thatrnattempted to find out teachers' perceptions of their roles,rnteachers' perceptions of how students perceived the roles ofrnteachers teaching the new materials and teachers' perceptions ofrnteaching materials, was designed for and administered tornteachers. To consolidate or refute the information obtainedrnthrough the questionnaire, an interview was also conducted withrnthe,. students in the study sample. Classroom observations werernalso employed to get some insights into how the teachers andrnlearners made use of the tasks in the new materials.rnThe study showed that the students were very optimisticrnabout the tasks, the new modes of organization and their newrnroles implied by the new materials. The study also showed thatrnthe teachers assessed more positively their roles in the morernrecent approaches than their roles In the traditionalrnapproaches.rnAs a whole, the study showed that both the teachers and thernstudents demonstrated a gradual shift from the perceptions ofrntheir more traditional roles as teachers and learners.
