The purpose of this study was to find out thernrelative effectiveness between the structural approachrnand the form-function approach in the teaching of thernmodal auxiliaries to Addis Ababa University first yearrnstudents 0 An experiment, in which a sample populationrnone hundred and three in four groups took part, wasrnconducted for eight wceks , Two of the four groupsrnformed the control group and the other two formed thernexperimental groupnrnofrnTwo sets of teaching materials were prepared forrnboth groups on the bases of the pedagogical principlesrnof the stated lanGuage teaching approacheso The controlrngroups were taught in the structural approach and thernexperimental groups in the form-function approacho Therernwere two participating teachers each having one controlrnand one experimental group .•rnAt the end of the experiment, an achievement testrnwas administered to both the control and experimentalrngroups 0 Statistical tests showed that the average scorernof the experimental groups was significantly greaterrnthan those of the control groupso Therefore, the nullrnhypothesis that there vlOuld not be any significantrndifference between tho achievement test average scoresrnof the control and experimental groups attributable tornthe adoption of the lorn-function approach had to bernrej ect ed , A conclusion vas drawn that the form-functionrnapproach was more effective· than the structural approachrnin the teaching of the Llodal auxiliaries to Addis AbabarnUni versi ty first year students
