The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of tutorial program inrndistance education at the tertiary level with reference to Alpha and AdmasUniversityrnColleges.The populations of this study included administrators, tutorial coordinators,rntutors and students. In this study a total of 266 participants were taken as a sample. Fromrnthis sample 50 of them were tutors, 200 were students and the rest were administratorsrnand tutorial program coordinators. For a better understanding of the situation a mixedrnresearch approach was employed.Questionnaireinterview,FGD,observationand documentrnanalysis were used as means of data collection. Frequency, percentiles, standardrndeviation, mean value and t-test were used for analyzing the quantitative data while thernqualitative data were thematically organized, categorized and examined to understandrnthe emerging patterns of responses. The findings of the study reveal that the tutorialrnservices provided by tutors were devoted largely to tutor’s verbal explanation ofrndescriptive facts. The current practice of distance education offering institutions of facetornface tutorials are provided on voluntary bases. Students’ survey responses showedrndissatisfaction with the inflexible nature of the resources, insufficient academic supportrnprovided and a preference for guided learning activities and participation in discussion.rnIt was found with satisfaction that learners have positive attitude towards tutorial andrndistance education in general. Furthermore, from the responses of the tutors/studentsrnthere is evidence that confirms students are benefited from face to face tutorial. The studyrnindicated that the absence or shortage of the modules during students’ registration wasrnserious problem that negatively affects students’performance,causes delays in graduationrnand students’ attendance and participation in tutorial sessions. The findings also revealrnthat visual aids were not employed in the tutorial session. In addition to this the studyrndisclosed that no electronic media was employed to facilitate the student support service.rnThe absence of practical exercise and demonstration was found to be the defects ofrntutorial session.Finally, basedon the findings and conclusions recommendations werernmade to address the problem under study
