Oromia has implemented Non Formal Basic Education (NFBE) curriculum.rnThe program has served as an altemative approaches to complement thernformal education program, so that it plays a great role in providingrneducational access for adults and children. Therefore, the purpose of thisrnstudy was to assess the successes and challenges of implementation ofrnNFBE Curriculum in Bale zone of Oromia Regional state. Based on thernpurpose of the study, the leaming environment, the success & bestrnpractices of the programs, support for NFBE programs facilitators in termsrnof training & supervision, the availability of cUlTiculWl1 materials andrnchallenges encountered were assessed.rnTo this end, descriptive survey method was used for the s tudy. Data wererngathered from officials, facilitators, center management committee (CMC)rnmembers and adult leamers. Data collection tools were questionnaire,rninterview, observation and focus group discussion. The data gatheredrnthrough questionnaire were analyzed using percentage whereas the datarngathered through interview; observation and focus group discussion wererntranscribed, analyzed and triangulated with the quantitative data wherernnecessary & appropriaternFindings of the study revealed that implementation of the program haverncontributed a lot to providing; leaming opportunity for adults and out-ofschoolrnchildren. Oromia Education Bureau changed the adult bc.sicrneducation program to functional adult literacy; facilitators training, theirrnsalary and the incentives provided were not sufficient; supervision andrnmonitoring and awareness creation for the community were found to bernlow; there were problems of textbooks and facilitator's manual, and poorrneducational facilities.rnThe efforts made to bring the school to the proximity of children and adultrnleamers help leamers to leam without going long distance; the shift inrnfocus of nonjormal adult bas ic education to functional adult literacy (FAL)rnencourages adult to come to NFBE centers to leam; lack of adequaternsupervision and training, s hortage of leaming materials and therninadequate linkage between NFBE centers & formal primary schools wouldrnhave negative impact on utilization of resources in the NFBE centers.rnBased on the major findings certain recommendations were made:rnGovemment bodies should coordinate the activities of stakeholders, therncommunity awareness should be promoted, facilitators should be providedrnwith short-term upgrading training, and fair incentives for facilitatorsrnshould be in place to motivate them.
