The main purpose of this study was to assess the status of school-basedrnmanagement in primary schools of East Wollega Zone and identify factors thatrnconstrained the practice, and forward possible solutions for its improvement.rnA descriptive survey method was employed to gather large variety of data-relatedrnto the subject under study. Samples were drawn from RED, WEO, schoolrnprincipals, teachers and PTA and KETB members. Totally, 168 respondents werernincluded in the study.rnQuestionnaire, interview, and documentary analysis were u sed to collect thernnecessary data. Obtained data were analyzed using statistical tools ofrnpercentage, mean, weighted mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA and post hocrncomparison of mean.rnThe result of the study indicated that the status of school-based management inrnthe zone was not satisfactory, and lacked proper coordination and participationrnof stakeholders and the required resources.rnThere was lade of trained and experienced school principals who could coordinaternthe staff, parents and other stakeholders; the participation of teachersrnand KETB and PTA members in the management of schools was not as intended,rnand the technical support provided to schools by WEO was insignificant. Besides,rnlow emphasis was given to raise the awareness of KETB and PTA in participatingrnin management of schools. Moreover, the required resource and authority was notrndecentralized to school level and the support of local authority to strengthenrnmanagement of schools was low.rnRecommendations given are assigning trained and experienced principals,rncapacitating KETB, PTA and teachers through training workshops, symposia andrnstrengthening the support of WAC and kebele administrative council, andrnprovision of continuous technical support by WEO to schools . In addition the wayrnresources could be decentralized to schools or allocated properly to schc ols isrncommented to be designed.
