The purpose of this study was to examine problems related to the practices of humanrnresource management and to compare their similarilies and differences between privaternand government secondary schools in Addis Ababa City Administration Specifically, thernstudy-sought in to teachers' intrinsic and extrinsic satisfactions in relation to teachingrnactlvilles, teachers' feeling about their appraisers and appraisal criteria andrncompensation and benefits in private and government secondaty schools in Addis AbabarnCity Administration Finally, teachers ' altiludes towards their school management werernexamined. A descriptive survey research method was used. Data were collected Fomrnteachers, department heads and vice-directors through questionnaire and in-depthrninterview. The secondary sources used were review of related literature to giverntheoretical frame to the study. Six secondary schools having 339 teachers werernconsidered as sample schools. One hundred-five teachers from government and 50rnprivate participated in the study. The data were analyzed using percentage, cumulativernmean scores, srandard deviation and F-ratio (one way ANOVA). 1n both private andrngovernment, it was found that the cumulative level of teachers' sati!>jaction with theirrnintrinsic job factors were not adequate to motivate them to perform to their maximumrnpotential. 1n addition, teachers in both private and government schools haverndissati!>jclction with some extrinsic job factors to the extent of unavoidably havingrndetrimental consequence on their encouragement to pel:form effectively and efficiently.rnTo this end, teachers were highly dissatisfied with theirjob security and pension schemernin private while salary payment in government. Furthermore, there were lack ofrnappraisal objectivity, incapability of appraisal standard and no discrelion of the resultrnwere found as a problem of teachers in p. rivate' and, government. Moreover, there wais nornbenefit given to teachers yet they were paid below their expectation Finally, managers inrnprivate schools were more influential and communicators than their counterparts inrngovernment. However, democratic style of leadership was jimclioning in both schools. Asrnthe study, aims to improve teachers' satisfaction and to lessen their dissati~raction it isrnindispensable to improve the teaching activities and teaching context of secondaryrnschools. Thus, enriching teaching activities and assigning teachers to various grade hasrnto improve intrinsic motivation, developing appropriate appraisal s]lstem is jimdamentalrnelements that seeks atlention Accordingly, rewarding out perj(Jrmers and establishingrncompensable salary structure also needs attention Finally, managers in governmentrnhave to offer training on how to handle and communicate with teachers.
