Many AAU undergraduate and graduate students of ILS attempted to examinernthe image of women characters in Amharic novels from Feminist critics' point ofrnview. However, except one, none attempted to thoroughly deal with a s inglernauthor works at different periods to find out whether a writer has followed arnconsistent trend or shows a variation in his portrayal of women. Besides many ofrnthe studies done on Amharic literary works based on Feminist literary criticismrnseem lack of depth in applying the theory.rnThe aim of this study is to analyze the portrayal of women characters in threernselected Amharic novels written by Sisay Nigusu from a Feminist critic's point ofrnview. The selected novels for the discussion are Girdosh (The Curtain) (1989),rnYeknat Zar (literary; Obsession with J ealousy) (1996) and Rekik Ashara (AbstractrnPrint) (2003).rnThe thesis has four sections. In the first section introduction to the study, rnstatement of the problem, objective and scope of the study are included. Thernsecond part mainly embraces theoretical background to the study, whichrndiscusses Feminism as a socio political movement and feminist literary criticism, rnand review of related works. Basing the Feminist theoretical concept the thirdrnpart analyses and compares the selected five women characters taken form thernthree novels. In the fourth part the finding of the s tudy is presented.rnThe finding of the study indicates the image of woman is distorted in the first twornnovels under discussion having the image of seductress, dependent, troublernmaker sex object selfish and irrespons ible. In the last novel Rekik Ashara thernWoman is portrayed as strong assertive, independent and problem solver. Thus itrncan be said that the writer has shown progress in his portrayal of women giIJingrnpositive image for his woman character.
