The main purpose of the study was to examine the determinants of dividend payout in Ethiopian private bank using bank specific factors and macro variables. To help with this, six years data from 2014/15 to 2019/20 for the sample of eight Ethiopian private banks were collected from banks audited financial statement then analyzed using panel data regression technique. The study used dividend payout as a dependent variable and six independent variables: profitability, liquidity, capital adequacy, investment opportunity, bank size, bank age from bank specific factor and GDP and foreign exchange rate from macro-economic factors. rnThe result of the study revealed that profitability, liquidity, capital adequacy, investment opportunity have positive and statistically significant impacts on dividend payout of selected Ethiopian private commercial banks while bank’s size have negative and statistically significant impact on dividend payout of the selected Ethiopian private commercial banks from the bank specific variables. On the other hand, Bank’s age from bank specific factor and foreign exchange rate from macro- economic factor is found to have no significant impact on dividend payout of the selected banks during the study period, 2014-2015. rnRecommendation for other researchers would be to add more variables from bank specific factor such as Ownership structure and macro-economic variables like national income. I would also recommend that the study period to be extended up to 2020 since this study did not include it.
