A cross sectional study was conducted with the objectives of assessing managementrnpractices, evaluate egg productive and reproductive performance and egg quality traitsrnof Isa Brown, white leghorn and Fayoumi under rural management, from February 2015rnto September 2015 in Dugda woreda of East Shewa,Zone, Ethiopia. Totally, 160rnrandomly selected respondents were included in the study from five purposively selectedrnPeasant Associations (PAs) from the district. The data collected were analyzed usingrnSPSS version 17. Major poultry production activities in the area were managed byrnwomen in the district, 68.7% respondents provide house to chicken, 92.5% of thernrespondents provided additional supplement. About 91.2% of the respondents used maizernand wheat as additional supplements, mostly three times a day about 66.9% andrnProvision of water 99.9% with 95% free access in the district . In the district 81.9% andrn94.6% respondents had good market access to sell eggs and chicken. Collectively, 50% ofrnchicken owner respondent vaccinate their chickens for prevention and control of differentrndisease and using dewormer and anti ecto-parasite about 25% and 25%, respectively.rnExtension services were used by 33.1% respondents in the district. Under rural chickenrnproduction system all family members participate in different activities and Women werernhighly responsible for many activities. Diseases, lack of knowledge about scientificrnpoultry management practices, lack of time due to farming activities, shortage of feedrnfrom the study area, lack of market, predators were listed as major constraints tornimproved chicken production in the district. Getting improved quality chicks byrnaffordable price, having good market access of improved chicken breed and egg withrnhigh price compared to local breed,, having marketing in cooperatives, awarenessrncreation, training on health management and chicken production, provision of creditrnfacility for chicken producer, attentions on overall management system, supply ofrnelectricity were mentioned as option to improve chicken productivity and marketing inrnthe study areas. The average eggs laid/year/bird was 248.82, 256.21, and 253.33 eggs forrnIsa brown, White leghorn and Fayoumi breeds respectively. Average age at first layingrnwas 165, 165 and 174 days for Isa brown, White leghorn and Fayoumi respectively. Isarnbrown was superior for egg weight, average shell thickness, shell weight, dried shellrnxvrnweight, yolk height, yolk weight, albumin weight and Haugh Unit than White leghorn andrnFayoumi, Isa brown and Fayoumi were superior than White leghorn by egg shape indexrnpercent, White leghorn was superior in albumin height than Isabrwon and Fayoumirnwhereas, Fayoumi was superior to Isabrwon and White leghorn by yolk colour.rnGenerally in the study district poor attention was given on modern poultry productionrnand management system and can be improved through continuous awareness creationrnand training and provision of good access to market and obtain better price.
