Agriculture is the major sector of the Ethiopian economy and it contributes about 50rnpercent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). So far all the concel'lled agencies have beenrnestimating the national agricultural production by considering only the rural areas. Thatrnis, they disregard the contributionji'omthe urban areas.rnAgriculture in urban areas has been studied in different countries in their AgriculturalrnCensus or as ad hoc survey for the purpose of estimating agricultural production, forrnconcel'l1s aboul hygiene problems and urban development. Urban agriculture in Ethiopiarnhas not been studied yet, and as a result there is a statistical gap in the agricultural sector.rnThis study is a preliminaJY baseline survey and is based on prill/aJy data which wererncollectedfi'om selected towns of East Gojam Zone.rnThe main objective of this study is to identifY the type of agricultural activities in urbanrnareas of East Gojam Zone and obtain information on these activities. In general it providesrnbenchmark data for agricultural researchers and policy makers.rnTo get this information, a probability two stage stratified sampling design was used. Usingrnthis design information was collectedji'om 405 urban agricultural holders.rnThe main results of the study indicate that in East Gojall/ Zone urban agricultural holdersrnare estimated to be 6188, estimated crop production is 12,820.82 quintals with a cultivatedrnarea of 1,614.79 hectares. The estimated total land use area is 2,827.90 hectares, estimatedrndomestic animals are 47,480, and other estimates are also obtained. Based on thesernfindings recommendations are provided which lIIay be useful for agricultural researchers,rnpolicy makers and other interested agricultural data users
