The purpose of this study was to investigate the utilization of school supplementaryrncurriculum materials in two private primary schools in Addis Ababa. To conduct thisrnstudy concurrent mixed research design was used. A total of 259 respondentsrnparticipated in the study comprising 174 students, 12 teachers, 65 parents, 4rnadministrators and 4 Education Bureau supplementary materials evaluators. Thernsample students were selected using stratified sampling and simple random samplingrntechnique. The sample schools, teachers, administrators and AAEB supplementaryrnmaterials evaluators were selected using purposive sampling techniques.rnQuestionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and document analysis were therndata collection tools employed for the study. Having checked the validity andrnreliability of the instruments data were collected from students, teachers, parents, rnadministrators and Addis Ababa Education Bureau supplementary curriculumrnmaterials ‘evaluators. Data from students were obtained by using questionnaire andrnFGD while data from teachers, administrators and Addis Ababa Education Bureaurnsupplementary materials’ evaluators were collected using interview. Moreover, datarnfrom parents were collected using open ended questionnaires. SPSS version 21 wasrnused to analyze data and to get frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. Thernfindings of this study revealed that stakeholders have positive view on the contributionrnof the school supplementary curriculum materials to students’ learning. However, inrnthe preparation of school supplementary curriculum materials, especially in using thernAddis Ababa regional state language, the schools did not consider the Education andrnTraining Policy as the schools were preparing supplementary materials in Englishrnlanguage. Thus, making supplementary curriculum materials’ proofreading, revisingrncontinuously, having forums for discussions with teachers on how they view the topicsrnand sub-topics of the syllabus and training teachers how to prepare supplementaryrncurriculum materials were suggested by stakeholders to improve schoolrnsupplementary curriculum materials. Hence, to improve the utilization of schoolrnsupplementary curriculum materials, schools need to organize a department thatrnchecks the supplementary curriculum materials before they are published. ThernEducation Bureau needs to work hard in creating deep awareness for teachers in thernpreparation and utilization of supplementary curriculum materials. In addition to this, rnthe Bureau may prepare supplementary curriculum materials that are standardizedrnand can be used by all schools as a model as well as creating forums that widen thernawareness of parents about the importance of children’s learning in their motherrntongue languages.rnKey words: Supplementary curriculum materials, Syllabus, Students’ learning
