The purpose of this study was to investigate the practices and challenges related to implementation of co-curricular activities in the Government secondary schools of the Gurage zone. In order to meet the objective of the study descriptive survey research method was employed to conduct the study. In order to collect data the researcher used questionnaire, interview, and document analyses. In the study 4 sample groups encompassing, 150 students, 62 teachers, 7 principals and 7 supervisors participated .The quantitative data were entered in to statistical package for social science (SPSS version 21.0) software analysis. Statistical measures were performed on quantitative data assembled from the respondents; frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were conducted. Finding of the study revealed that the attention that school give to co-curricular activities were moderate. Hence, the level of current implementation of co-curricular activities was low. Beside the principals were more aware on co-curricular activities than students and teachers, about less an hour spent per week in co-curricular activities. Co-curricular activities growth the student’s social issues, strength the relation between students and teachers and help to develop personality and self-direction of students .Hence, students more participation in co-curricular activities their academic achievements were higher than to those who did not participated in co-curricular activities in secondary schools. Regarding negatively affecting factors that practical implementation of co-curricular activities, the major factors were inadequate facilities and lack of equipment’s, lack of effective monitoring and guidance, low interests and less participation exhibited in secondary schools. Finally it was recommended that based on finding the study school under the study as well as woreda educational office training program should be organized for the concern bodies, schools planning for strong monitoring, evaluation, and feedback mechanism. Adequate facilities and budget to be allocated by the government to actively implementing these activities properly, raising students and teachers interests, giving more chance for students to lead co-curricular activities, making strong co-operation among students, ministry of education should be prepare the new framework for the implementation of co-curricular activities in the school level.
