The study looks at the practices and challenges of management development in privaternsecondary schools of Arada sub city. The study pictures the practices and challenges ofrnmanagement development faced by the school managers based on the insight of lower levelrnmanagers and the education officers .In trying to understand the practices of the secondaryrnschools this study uses managerial practices (trainings, mentoring, job rotation, coaching, onrnjob trainings, and off job trainings) as a data base criteria with their qualification, experiencernand skills. The study uses survey as a methodology for investigating the managementrndevelopment practices. The study employs open and close ended questionnaires, interview andrnobservation to collect data. The questionnaires were tested using percentage and t-test. The datarngathered from the respondents helped to measure the practice of secondary schools managers inrnthe area. The finding of the study revealed that: first, management development practices basedrnon need assessment most respondents’ low the need assessment was not properly done tornaddress the needs of individuals and improve their performances. And also there is an integratedrneffort made by the schools in identifying the need assessment of employee based on their workingrnexperience and culture of the organization. Second, approaches to management developmentrnmost respondents medium and low that the schools were not concerned about it. Third,rnevaluation of the management development programs as the majority of the respondents saysrneffectiveness of the program is not yet ensured or low. Finally the challenges faced by thernorganizations were high that there are many challenges in the management development processrnas discussed. In general the management development practices and challenges of privaternsecondary schools were inefficient and ineffective. The researcher recommends, privaternsecondary schools would be better if they identify the management skill gaps of the managersrnhelp to plan and conduct efficient and effective managers that promote the school to a betterrnlevel that produce quality education a better future generation.
