The purpose of this study was to assess the practices of school-based supervision in governmentrnsecondary schools of Yeka Sub-city. Five basic questions were formulated, which emphasized thernextent to which all the sample stakeholders understand about the school-based supervision inrnsecondary schools of Yeka sub-city, the various supervisory options applied by supervisors inrnthese schools, the procedures employed in classroom observation in the secondary schools, thernextent to which school-based supervisors discharge their responsibilities and the challengesrnexisting in the implementation of school-based supervision. To conduct this study, the descriptivernsurvey method was employed. Two Sub-city and two Woreda Education office supervisionrncoordinators were involved in the interview Session. Among the 6 government secondary schoolsrnfound in the sub-city, 3 of them were selected randomly as sample schools. From these samplernschools, 87 teachers and 36 school-based supervisors were also included as respondents usingrnsimple random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as main tool of data collection.rnInterview and document analysis were used to substantiate the data gathered throughrnquestionnaires. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were utilized to analyzernquantitative data gained through the questionnaires. The qualitative data gathered thoroughrninterview and document analysis were by narration. The result of the study indicated thatrnteachers lack awareness and orientation on the activities and significance of school-basedrnsupervision, ineffectiveness of the practices of supervisory options matching with the individualrnteacher’s developmental level, and inability of supervisors to apply the necessary procedures forrnclassroom observation properly. On the other hand, among the factors influencing the schoolbasedrnsupervision, lack of relevant training programs for supervisors, scarcity of experiencedrnsupervisors in school-based supervision activities, lack of supervision manuals in the schoolsrnand shortage of allocated budget for supervisory activities. Finally, to minimize the problems ofrnschool-based supervision in secondary schools, it is recommended to give relevant in-servicerntrainings for supervisors to upgrade their supervisory activities, necessary resources such asrnsupervision manuals and adequate budget for the success of supervision at the school level werernsuggested.rnKey Words: Supervision, School based supervision and clinical supervision
