The purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting academic performance ofrnstudents in Secondary Schools in Yemalogi Welel Woreda , Kellem Wollega Zone ,rnOromia Regional State. In the study, descriptive survey research design was employedrnand using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Accordingly, three SecondaryrnSchools were addressed by this study using availability sampling techniques.15 schoolrnleaders(main principals using purposive sampling techniques and department headsrnusing simple random ) and 10 school Parent Teacher Association (PTA) were selected byrnsimple random sampling , 31 teachers and 140 were selected by Simple random samplingrntechnique, 10 Woreda Education Office Expert were selected by simple randomrnsampling and 1 woreda supervisor was selected by purposive sampling technique and 3rngroups of selective students‟ council were selected comprising each group fivernmembers from the 3 schools by employing availability sampling as key respondents.rnQuestionnaires, interviews, focus group discussion and formal observation were used forrnthe purpose of collecting relevant data and data obtained through questionnaires werernanalyzed using statistical tools like frequency and percentage. Moreover, data gatheredrnthrough interview were also analyzed in narrative form. The finding of the study revealedrnthat most of the students lack self-preparation, low ability and willingness to attend class,rnsome teachers didn‟t deliver quality teaching as expected and did not use participatoryrnapproach. The government gave low attention to motivate and provide necessary trainingrnfor teachers. Students‟ that dissatisfied with learning environment such as lack ofrnstandardized library and laboratory. Moreover, standardized assessment was not givenrnfor students on time; woreda Education offices gave low attention to improve academicrnperformance of students. Thus, the researcher recommends that the government has tornfacilitate learning environment, motivate and train teachers, the principal, supervisorrnand Woreda Education Office should make good coordination to work together and thernschool should create awareness continuously for students to improve students‟ academicrnperformance.
