The main objective of this study was to assess the existing practices and challenges faced in implementing active learning strategies in selected government secondary schools at Bole sub city. The research was aimed at investigating the implementation of active learning techniques in the selected government Secondary Schools; to examine the perceptions of teachers and students regarding active learning strategies and to identify the major challenges that hinder the implementation of active learning methods in the selected government Secondary Schools. Both primary and secondary data source were used in gathering the required information. The techniques of collecting primary data source include semi-structured questionnaires from teachers and students, and in depth interview was held with the school principals. Secondary data sources were collected from published and unpublished materials like reports, project documents, policy documents, books, research findings, and other publications. The study used random sampling to select the schools teachers and students. The study found that lecture (talk and chalk) method is largely practiced in the schools. Besides, group work, questioning and answer and cooperative learning are moderately practiced. Both teachers and students have good perceptions to active learning techniques. There are different challenges that inhibit implementation of active learning techniques at schools. Problems like absence of different guide book in the school library, disagreement and less friendship among the students, and others are found to among abstracting factors.
