The main purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting girls’ academic achievements in government secondary schools of Kolfe Keranio sub city. Based on review of the related literature, basic research question were formulated. For this study, out of 8 governmental secondary schools which are found in the sub city 3 schools, out of 2988 female students 344 students and out of 276 teachers, 150 teachers were selected by simple random sampling techniques and I have taken all the 6 principals and supervisors by purposive sampling method. Totally, from 3270 populations, 500 were selected for the study. For data gathering, both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed. The quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires. The final version of the questionnaire was administrated for 344 girl students and 150 teachers of Governmental Secondary Schools of Kolfe Keranio sub city. The qualitative instrument constituted of interview, and secondary data source analysis. The descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency, percentage and mean have been used for data analysis. As the finding of the study indicated that low level of parental education, low level of parental involvement in their daughter education, household chores, negatively affect girls’ academic achievement. School related factors like lack of role model female teachers, teachers’ attitude, lack of qualified teachers and shortage of reference books and well-organized libraries adversely affected girls’ academic performance. The core issues were pointed out in the conclusion part of the study and the researcher recommendations are, educational officials at various levels should promote and enhance awareness creation programs on gender issues in education and other community members. Teachers and school principals should work jointly with girl students and their parents to improve poor girls’ academic performance. Furthermore, educational authorities, NGOs, and the community should work together to support girls education by facilitating the school with necessary input for girls by updating teachers with gender issues in education. The schools themselves should create conducive environment to empower girls by assigning them as a team leader and members in school curricular activities.
