Both depression and anticipated stigma are the most prevalent psychosocial problems among Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) patients. It has substantial impact on individual psychosocial problems and drug adherence.rnThe general objective of the study to assess the psychosocial problems, specifically the level of depression and the anticipated stigma, faced by MDR TB patients at St. Peter specialized hospital in Addis Ababa. Quantitative method was employed to achieve the research objectiverna cross-sectional study was conducted at St Peter specialized hospital from 1st - 31st August 2018. A total of 113 MDR TB patients was included in this study. All MDR-TB patients have follow up in the hospital in the study period including outpatient and in-patient. Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, Pearson correlation, independent t-test and One way ANOVA. among the 113 MDR-TB patients. 38(33.6%) had mild, 18(15.9%) had moderate, and 08(7.1%), had severe depressive symptoms. The depression level of MDR TB patients is 64(56.7%) and the prevalence of anticipated stigma family/friends, coworker/employer and health care provider was 61.0%, 36.3% and 8% respectively. Depression had significant difference on sex, i.e. female MDR TB patients had more depressed than male patients where as anticipated stigma had no significant difference between male and females. When compare in line with, age 21-30, separated and divorced, can read and write and very insufficient monthly income MDR TB patients had more depressed than others and also, anticipated stigma more seen in 31-65 of age, separated & divorced, can’t read and write, and very insufficient of MDR TB patients. The result of Pearson correlation seen that depression had weak positive correlation with age & marital status, and had moderate positive correlation with sex and monthly income and moderate negative correlation with educational status. Anticipated stigma had weak positive correlation with sex, marital status & age and had moderate positive correlation with monthly income but had moderate negative correlation with educational status. Generally depression had moderate correlation with anticipated stigma. Considering, the result of the study, the stakeholder who participated in the prevention and treatment program of MDR TB, psychological and social assessment should be undertaken at base line level and at follow up. This helps to detect depression and stigma at early level so that intervention could be done. And health workers should be technically well equipped to anticipate and screen patients for depression and stigma for chronic illness patients like MDR TB.
