The purpose of study was to assess the practices and problems of educational materialrnmanagement in secondary schools of study area. The method employed for the study was mixedrnmethod and the design employed was descriptive survey research design. For this study, 388rnteachers, 30 principals, 5 supervisors, 9store keepers, 11 laboratory technicians, 10 librariansrnand 9 accountants with a total of 462 respondents were involved as a target population of thernstudy. Data for the study was collected from supervisors, store keepers, laboratory technicians,rnlibrarians, principals and accountants who were selected using availability sampling techniquernwhile 197 teachers and 9 secondary schools were selected by simple random sampling techniquernfor the study. The data gathering tools employed were questionnaire, interview and observationrnchecklist. The participants of interview were 5 supervisors, 9 store keepers, 11 laboratoryrntechnicians, 10 librarians. Questionnaire was administered to 197 teachers and 30principals, ofrnwhich186 from teachers and 30principals were properly filled and returned. But 11 (5.5%) of thernquestionnaire were not collected from teachers due to the fact that there were problems of clarityrnand were not filled properly. The level of community participation in material planning andrnpurchasing for the school is below the expected level. Lack of skilled man power on inventoryrnsystem and lack of training for the staff and other stakeholders in material management in thernschools were very serious problem in Wolaita zone secondary schools. All school leaders shouldrndevelop the culture of school community participation in school material planning andrnpurchasing since it increases the trust in school management and accelerate school activities tornits goal. Proper monitoring and follow up leads the materials utilization toward the objective. Sornthe school leaders and WEO should design continuous follow up framework for materialrnmanagement of the schools.
