The purpose of the present study was to assess university leaders’ emotional intelligence andrntheir leadership effectiveness from the perspective of their immediate subordinates. To this end,rna concurrent explanatory mixed method design was employed. From nine first generationrnuniversities, I took five of them using a stratified random sampling technique. I took 10rnmanagement committee members, who are immediate subordinates of university presidents,rnfrom each of the sampled universities through comprehensive sampling. In addition, I randomlyrntook 210 academic commission and 510 department council members as immediate respondentsrnfrom the sampled colleges and departments. As a result, I distributed 770 five point Likert scalerntype questionnaires to the sampled respondents out of which 84.2% (648) of them werernsuccessfully completed and returned. Besides, I conducted semi-structured interviews withrnpurposely selected two Ministry of education supervision experts, two academic vice presidentsrnand five college deans who were serving as immediate supervisors for university presidents,rncollege deans and department heads respectively. I analyzed the quantitative data using bothrndescriptive and inferential statistics such as; group mean, SD, one way ANOVA, Pearson’srncorrelation, linear and multiple regression, and CFA with the help of SPSS and AMOS softwarernversion 23. I analyzed the qualitative data using think paragraph descriptions. The study revealedrnthat university leaders did not have a good level of emotional intelligence competencies thatrnwould enable them to effectively perform their leadership duties and responsibilities. The studyrnalso found that university leaders were not effective in performing the different leadership tasks.rnThe study also revealed that leaders’ emotional intelligence did not only has a positivernrelationship (r (646) = 0.662, p < 0.01) with their leadership effectiveness, but it alsornsignificantly predicts their leadership effectiveness (F (1, 646) = 502.747, p
