The main purpose of this study was to assess the practice of school-based instructional supervision, measure its effectiveness and determine the influence of school, supervisors, teachers and education management bodies’ related factors on the implementation of the School-Based Instructional Supervision (SBIS) in government primary schools in Arada Sub-City, Addis Ababa. The descriptive explanatory research method was employed in the study. Data was collected with closed-ended questionnaires from teachers, supervisors, principals, SBS committee members and department heads working in 7 government primary schools in Arada Sub-city. The instruments were validated with the necessary statistical tools. A stratified sampling method was applied in the study. Descriptive and inferential analysis was done through STATA 14 and correlation and regression (OLS) were applied to examine the association and influence level of the school, supervisors, teachers, and education management body-related factors on the implementation of SBIS in primary schools in Arada sub-city. The result of the study indicates that SBIS practice has a significant effect in improving the teaching and learning process but less significant practices in improving inputs and outcomes of the teaching and learning, assisting teachers to plan & evaluate curriculum materials. Moreover, it was less focused on maintaining services to be preventive, corrective and facilitating the instruction and reduced focus on encouraging teachers to engage in research activities and in maintaining human relations and cooperation among staff. The most influencing determinants of SBIS implementation in government primary schools in Arada Sub-city were management-related factors with the regression coefficient (B=0.384) and the four determinants have contributed to 74.22% (R2= 0.7422) of the variation of SIBS implementation in government primary schools in Arada Sub-city. Based on this result, the study recommended that serious attention has to be given to management-related determinants. Moreover, teachers' and supervisors' related determinants should be the focus areas to work on, to improve the implementation of the SBIS in Arada Sub-city.rnKeywords: SBIS implementation, supervision, practice, determinants, primary schools
