The main purpose of this study was to investigate "Practices and challenges of implementing induction program in the government secondary schools of the Addis Ababa City Government". The research employed in the study was descriptive survey method, which is supplemented by qualitative data. The sampling techniques used included purposive, availability and simple random sampling. The sample size was 78 mentor teachers, 78 mentee teachers, 47 principals, 5 supervisors and 12 department heads with the total of 220 participants. The data gathering tools employed were questionnaire, interview as well as document analysis. The participants of interview were supervisors and department heads. The findings indicated that the number of mentors, mentees and some principals were not trained mentoring program properly; planning of induction activity mainly made by principals without involving mentors and mentees and also there is no consistent or similar way to select and assign mentors among school even within a school. The major challenges of implementing induction activities were: inadequate number of experience and competent teacher to serve as a mentor, lack of commitment, mentees are not willing or interested in receiving mentoring support, work load, Poor follow up and feedback, thus the current practice of implementing induction program at secondary school level was not as the expected result as the ministry of education induction training manual. So to take an immediate problem solving skills in Addis Ababa secondary school.rnTo improve these problems, it is recommended that, it will be appropriate to establish a system of training and upgrading mechanism to raise the relationship between mentors and mentees, orienting teachers and principals in advance with the overall contents of the professional growth, motivating teachers to willingly take more responsibilities in the implementation process, allocating sufficient budget, increasing the commitment of teachers and principals by giving motivation, in order to implement the induction program sufficiently and to improve the students‟ academic performance and teachers effectiveness. Finally, in order to get better practices of implementing induction program, education leaders at various levels and schools should be pay attention.rnKey words: Induction program, Government secondary school, professional growth, academic performance and teacher’s effectiveness
