The purpose of this study was to investigate the contributions of communities in improvingrnquality of education in South West Shoa Zone of Oronia Regional state and indicatesrnsolutions to the problem identified. In addition, the study was intended to give answers to:rnWhat are the current practices, challenges, opportunities, and the possible solutions ofrncommunity participation in improving quality of education to alleviate the problems ofrncommunity participation in schools. For this study descriptive survey design was employed.rnThe target population for the study were teachers, school principals, vice principals,rnsecondary school supervisors, PTA chairpersons and woreda education office heads. Duernto the small population size, principals, vice principals, supervisors, PTA chairpersons andrnWEO heads were drawn from eight schools by using availability sampling technique andrnthe teachers were selected by simple random sampling technique. In this study bothrnqualitative and quantitative methods were used. In order to collect data, questionnaires,rninterview and document analysis were used to collect data to answer the above researchrnquestions. The instruments were validated by advisors and experts and a pilot study wasrncarried out and reliability coefficient of 0.77 was obtained.Data was collected both fromrnprimary and secondary sources. The primary data was obtained directly from the samplernteachers, school principals and vice principals, supervisors and PTA chairpersons by usingrnquestionnaires and from woreda education office heads on using semi-structuredrninterview. The major findings concerning the current practices of community participationrnin improving quality of education was not satisfactory.Regarding to the factors that affectrncommunity participation. Again, the strategies to be used by the schools and WEOs tornenhance community participation in improving quality of education were found to be low.rnThus, to improve the situation, allowing the community to participate actively in schools,rnprovide adequate training to the school principals, teachers and communityrnrepresentatives on their roles and responsibilities, creating conducive workingrnenvironment to attract the community, participating the community in planning,rnimplementing, managing, monitoring and evaluation, participating the communityrnrepresentatives in decision making process and arrange appropriate time of meeting onrncommon interest are recommended.
