Understanding the nature of wastewater is fundamental for the design of appropriaternwastewater treatment plants and the selection of effective treatment technologies. Thernobjective of the study was to develop biological processes and evaluate its effectiveness forrnthe treatment of Malt Factory Effluent. While developing a lab-scale biological treatment forrnAssela Malt Factory, quality and quantity of periodically taken samples at different stages ofrnproduction process were taken and characterized for their composition using standardrnmethods. Significant fluctuation in the amount of COD was observed (3251+ 530.48-rn1190.75+ 798.68). COD: BOD ratio (1:2.93-2.99) indicated that the wastewater is amenablernto biological treatment. Spent grains, germules and other skimmed materials contribute tornincreased total suspended solid of wastewater. The nutrient loads for the wastewater alsornvary at different sites of the production process. For instance, phosphate was found to bernhigh in first wet steep (55.92+ 21.57), nitrogen at second wet steep and sulphate in therntreated inlet raw water.rnGeneral evaluation of anoxic and aerobic lab-scale bioprocess wastewater treatment plantrnindicated that the effluent released from Assela Malt factory is liquid enough to meetrndischarge limits with over 94% removal efficiency for BOD and COD, with the exception ofrnphosphate for the treatment of malt factory effluent.rnAdjacent to end of pipe treatment, incorporating physical screening and sorting spent grains, rnbefore joining equalization tanks; cleaning processes through integrated water managementrntechnique is recommended to reduce COD level in the effluent and the amount of wastewaterrnrequiring disposal. Such clean in place activities would greatly contribute and made thernwastewater to be treated well below the effluent discharge limits; hence, reusing them forrndifferent applications becomes possible. Finally, before establishing treatment plant for thernfactory effluent, on-site pilot scale treatment plant is recommended based onrncharacterization and performance evaluation of the developed lab-scale anoxic and aerobicrnbioprocess treatment-plant.
