Background: IUDs are very safe and highly effective methods of contraception that can be used at anyrnpoint of the menstrual cycle and postpartum. They can also be used as an emergency contraception. Allrnthese benefits should make them the preferred choice amongst clients. Further data is needed about theirrnrate of utilization. rnObjective: The primary objective of this study is to assess the utilization of the IUD and the differentrnfactors that affect its utilization in clients of the family planning clinics in health centers. rnMethods: A health center based cross sectional quantitative study with a sample size of 319 wasrnconducted. The data collection was conducted from may1st, 2020 to june30th, 2020 on women in thernreproductive age coming to the family planning clinic at the health center. A pretest was done. Therncollected data was entered into EPI-INFO then was analyzed using SPSS version 25.statisticalrnsignificance is declared at P value < 0.05.Group comparison was assessed with chi square. Multivariaternbinary logistic regression was used to detect factors associated with IUCD utilization. rnResults: The IUCD utilization rate was only 12.9% among the clients of the family planning clinic werernusing the IUCD at the time of the study. The study found that younger age groups are 0.168 times lessrnlikely than the older age group to use the IUCD. Women who knew that the IUCD is used for thernprevention of unwanted pregnancy were 9.739 times more likely to choose to use it than women whorndon’t have the knowledge. Clients are 0.002 times less likely to use the IUCD because of side effectsrnthan those who do not choose the IUCD because of other reasons. Those who had plans for conceptionrnin the near future (AOR 0.000:95%CI= .000-.021) were less likely to use the IUCD than those who didn’trnhave plans. Clients whose source of information was a health professional were found to be 0.224 timesrnand those whose source was the media were 0.368 times less likely to use the IUCD than those who gotrntheir information elsewhere. Spouse influence and side effects had significant impact on the clients’rnchoice to switch 0.125 and 0.025 times less likely to other contraception methods. rnConclusion: The factors found to have a significant impact on the use of the IUCD were Age, the possiblyrnof side effects, the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, the sources of information that the media, thernhealth professional, plans to conceive and Spousal influence. All concerned bodies should work tornincrease awareness for the population to benefit from the IUCD contraceptive method.
