Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa next to Nigeria with a populationrnestimated at 99.39 million out of which over 20.4% live in urban and peri-urban areas.rnEthiopian agriculture is characterized by low productivity. As a result, the country has beenrna scene of poverty and persistent food insecurity. To solve this problem assessing urban andrnperi urban agriculture and forestry for climate change adaptation and mitigation mechanismrnplay important role in the livelihoods of urban and peri urban farmers in particular and thernsociety at large. It helps to realize the relevance of the sector in urban and peri urban povertyrnalleviation. The main inspirations of urban and peri urban agriculture and forestry studiesrnwere the need to investigate and understand the forces that drive food insecurity and foodrnself-reliance. Therefore, this study was conducted in Yeka Sub City of Addis Ababa during thernproduction season of 2019/20 to assessing urban and peri urban agriculture and forestry forrnclimate change adaptation and mitigation mechanism and identify socio-economic factorsrnaffecting the urban and peri urban agriculture of the households. A three-stage samplingrntechnique was employed to select 148 households which participated in urban and peri urbanrnagriculture and forestry. Both primary and secondary data have been used to generate thernrequired information. Descriptive statistics tools were employed to analyzed the statisticalrndata such as percentage, mean, and the like are used in describing the final result. Thernobjectives of the study were to assess the implication of urban and peri- urban agriculturernand forestry for climate change adaptation and mitigation mechanism in Yeka sub City, andrntheir roles in livelihoods of urban and peri urban farmer households and urban povertyrnalleviation, and to provide empirical evidences on the level of urban and peri urban farmersrnawareness on climate change in relation to their farming system. The results of the studyrnindicated that urban and peri urban agriculture in Yeka sub city has significant influence onrnthe livelihoods of urban and peri urban households. On the other hand, this researchrndiscusses also the cultivating vegetable crops and cereal crops are the most commonrnagricultural activities produced by the urban and peri urban farmers. The existing conditionrnof the forest cover in Yeka sub city is exposed to over clear cutting, deforestation of land forrncultivation and settlement. This study recommends that government should take immediaternsteps to establish the institutional setup to facilitate the urban and peri urban forestry andrngreening programs
