Isozyme electrophoresis was used to assess genetic variability in twelvernpopulations of Guizotia abyssinica collected from Gojam and Welo regions.rnThree enzyme systems namely, phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI; E.C.5.3.1.9),rnß-esterase (ß-EST; E.C.3.1.1.-), and aspartate aminotransferase (AAT;rnE.C.2.6.1.1.) were studied. A total of 17 alleles were observed from eightrngenetic loci for the three enzyme systems from which five loci werernpolymorphic. The mean percentage polymorphic loci (PP), the mean number ofrnalleles per locus (AP), the mean observed heterozygosity (Hop) and the meanrnexpected heterozygosity (Hep) showed the range 37.5-62.5%, 1.625-1.875,rn0.1875-0.3375 and 0.1901-0.2599, respectively. The mean populationrndifferentiation (FST) estimated was 0.2117. The averages of mean generndiversities of Gojam and Welo populations pooled separately were 0.2307 andrn0.2064, respectively. The genetic distance calculated for each pair wiserncomparison ranged from 0.0012-0.2346. The results indicate the presence ofrnhigh genetic variability within and between populations of Guizotia abyssinica.rnThe results also show higher level of within population variability in Gojamrnthan Welo populations. Dendrogram drawn based genetic distance revealedrnsome level of association between populations of the same region.
