In Ethiopia, the electric sector is already experiencing considerable rising in generation of powerrnfrom renewable energy sources like the GERD. Large amounts of new generation are expected inrnthe near-term future, which will require additional distribution planning to properly integraternthese resources into the existing electric power supply system. The Distribution expansionrnplanning has an important role in this environment to guarantee the security of the supply withrnthe required levels of quality and price. Therefore, the realization of new distribution lines mustrnbe fast and accurate to avoid delays to connect new power sources and potential supply andrnreliability problems. In this sense, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be a powerfulrntool that provides decision support techniques, which enables a transparent, sustainable, fasterrnand cheaper planning process for in power distribution systems. Manual approach electric linernrouting based on paper maps, aerial photographs and field visits can generate inconsistent results, rnbesides being a time consuming and intensive labor activity. The application of methodologiesrnbased on geographic information system (GIS) combined with multi-criteria assessment (MCA)rnmethods are applied for this study and have proved to be less time taking and cost savings on thernelectric line planning step. For this Aba-Samuel substation supply area is studied and lower lengthrnand lower total cost route is generated via densification and intensification analysis. For routernselection, criteria’s like proximity to road, land use land cover and household density arernconsidered. ODK data collection method is used to collect primary data.
