A well-motivated staff influences the efficiency and business continuity of an organization by committing him/herself to the achievement of organizational goals. The main objective of this study is to examine factors affecting employee motivation in GIZ Ethiopia for national staff whose duty station is based in Addis. This study examined Perceived Autonomy, Job Satisfaction, Work-Life Balance, Employee Well-Being, Training, and Monetary Incentive as factors affecting employee motivation. A mixed research approach was employed to answer the research questions and the study was done based on primary and secondary data sources. Quantitative data was gathered using survey questionnaire and a total of 121 respondents completed the questionnaires. To triangulate and better generalize the findings of the quantitative data, three virtual interview sessions (via MS Teams considering COVID-19 SOP) were conducted with selected Managers and Head of Unit and narrative analysis was applied. Descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the responses to find out the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables. The findings from correlation analysis revealed that five of the selected dependent variables have a weak positive correlation with Employee Motivation whereas Work-Life Balance has a weak negative correlation. On the other hand, the result form regression analysis shows that Employee Well-Being and Monetary Incentive are significant factors affecting Employee Motivation while Perceived Autonomy and Training are not significant factors affecting Employee Motivation in this company. Job Satisfaction and Work-Life Balance are not significant positive factors affecting Employee Motivation. In general, 30.40% changes in the dependent variable is because of changes in the independent variable while the remaining variance is explained by other factors. Moreover, the findings from qualitative data analysis indicates that good leadership, better relationship , professional teams, reputation GIZ has worldwide, working environment, promotion, salary, empowerment, recognition, job security and employee safety are mentioned as factors affecting Employee Motivation and employees value more reputation of GIZ and better relationship mainly as it gives them internal satisfaction . Majority of the employees wish salary scale, empowerment, promotion, performance assessment rating, recognition, housing allowance and school fee coverage to be included or amended to more motivate the national staff.
