Land degradation, one of the subsequent negative results of land-use dynamics, hasrnbecome a critical problem in many parts of the Ethiopian highlands. There is great needrnfor rehabilitation and conservation works in such areas. The aim of this study is tornempirically assess the magnitude of impactland-use!cover change has on livelihoods andrnidentifY changes realized following government rural intervention projects focusing onrnland management technologies. The analysis of land-use/cover changes involvedrninterpretation of available satellite images of the study area (taken in 199314, andrn2007/8, respectively). For the assessment of soil loss due to erosion by water, rill erosion, rnland degradation etc .. . and its implication on food security, a survey study in the studyrnarea was undertaken at the scale of cultivatedfields.rnInvestigation on available data of land-use/cover change indicates that over the fifteenrnyears or so considered, the main type of land use remained agriculture. The majorrnchanges observed were the increase in cropland and shrub land areas at the expense ofrnthe open grazing and woodland areas. This has implication on runoff generation. Thernpeople of the study area are, therefore, facing problems of poverty and resourcerndegradation, which require prudently composed solutions that integrate development andrnconservation measures.rnThe newly introduced SWC measures have generally obtained acceptance by the localrnfarmers. They are acknowledged as being affective measures in arresting soil erosionrnand as having the potential to improve land productivity. Still, their sustainable adoptionrnand widespread replication by the farmers seem less likely. The major factorsrndiscouraging the farmers from adopting the introduced soil and water conservationrntechnologies on their farms were found to be labor shortage, land tenure uncertainty andrnproblem of fitness of the technologies to the farmers' requirements a~d the farmingrnsystem circumstances. Though it was claimed that participatory procedures werernfollowed, facts on the ground did not seem to support this. The study which started inrnMay 2008 and ended in July of 2009 concludes by suggesting some measures that shouldrnbe taken to enhance adoption and widespread replication of the conservationrntechnologies by the farmers and ensure sustainable land-use in the area.
