Marital dissolution in Amhara Region is among the highest in Ethiopia and stem Fom arnrange of demographic and socio-economic factors. This study aimed at analyzingrndemographic and socio-economic factors that influence marital dissolution in rural partsrnof the Amhara Region by taking one of the woredas in the Region. The samplingrntechnique followed a multistage sampling; in the first slep six kebeles were selectedrnrandomly and in the second slage twelve gots (two FOI11 each kebele) were selected againrnrandomly Gild household listing in the selected gots were undertaken in order to identifyrnthe larget population. Women who were eligible for the study were systematicallyrnselected Fom the household listing. A structured questionnaire was administered byrnlrained interviewers. A total of 731 ever married women who were aged less than 55rnyears excluding Ihose who were widowed of their first husband were interviewed usingrnsrructured queslionnaire. If more than one respondent was idemified in a household,rn10llelY method was used to select one eligible respondent. FGD was also undertaken torncollect some qualitative informatian 011 marital dissolution. The analysis is made alrnindividual level on the basis of univariate, bivariate and multivariate methods. The resultrnof bivariate analysis showed that most of the demographic and socio-economic factorsrnhad relationship with marital dissolution. Moreover, large proportion of the respondentsrn(56 percent) had dissolved their first marriages. The multivariate analysis also showedrnthat age al first marriage, duration of marriage, number of children born in thernmarriage. decision making power in economic issues in the household and contraceptivernuse. land ownership and domestic violence were found to be significantly related tornmarital dissolution. However, types of household women were living. owners/7l1) of calliernand literacy stalus were found to be insignificant.
