Studies on household livelihood security ojien explain what and how households make theirrnlivelihoods within the realm of prevailing contexts. This research explores livelihoodrnresources, vulnerability and coping strategies of households in the three selected kebeles ofrnTach Gayint Woreda. To this end, household livelihood security approach was used to providernan explicit focus on what matters to rural livelihoods in the studied areas. The study findingsrnwere drawn .li·om data generated' through the combination of hath qualitative researchrnmethods and quantitative household survey methodrnParticipatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques involved participants from various socioeconomicrngroups with the view of gelling holistic views and a better picture of the prevailingrncontexts through the participation of the peasants in the study.rnResults obtained reveal that livelihood systems in the study areas are dominated byrnsubsistence - oriented small holder agriculture in which households practiced mixed farmingrnwhere both animal and crop production are carried out concurrently. In addition, the studiedrnhouseholds also pursued non-farm activities although the activities were often low paid type.rnOn the other hand, the stock of productive assets held by households such as holdings of land,rnlivestock and other assets are low and possibly deteriorating.rnEvidences ji-om the data also showed that the studied households have been suffering ji-omrnfrequent and severe disasters for many years which include drought, jloodl', insects and pests,rnand epidemics. As a result, livelihoods in the area are linked to persisting vulnerability whichrnis the result of combination of factors constraining the options and opportunities open to thernhouseholds. Ever increasing population growth which has placed extreme pressure on scarcernland resources, increasing environmental degradation, low and erratic rainfall, depletion ofrnasset base, declining land productivity and lack of appropriate technologies that are neededrnfor intensifYing production together with the lack of viable livelihood diversificationrnopportunities were among the major causes for their vulnerability.rnMore than hail' of the households do not produce enough food to cover their needs for sixrnmonths and those that can produce enough food to feed themselves year round were about 15rnpercent. In this regard, repeated occurrences of drought and adverse weather pattern, foodrnprice injlation, inability to produce sufficient food crops and rear livestock due to variousrnfacto rs, and failure to properly utilize own production and other earnings were among thernmain reasons of households for being food insecure. The overall result is that the householdsrnhave to cope with the persisting vulnerabilities to feed themselves and thus they have adoptedrncoping strategies in response to the different risks and shocks to their livelihoods.rnThis paper argues that effective ways to deal with household livelihood insecurity in TachrnGayint must address the underlying causes of increased vulnerability for most households inrnthe area.rnKey Words: Household, livelihood, vulnerability, and coping strategies.
