Premarital sexual behavior, pregnancy and childbearing a rernrecently reputed as serious social problems of teenagers in therndeveloped and developing countr ies . Al though results of thernvery 1 imi ted surveys conducted in some of the Sub-SaharanrnAfrica countr1es reveal that the pregnancy and fertility ofrnunmarried adolescents have been increasing recently; the riskrnfactors are not clearly examined and need to be furtherrnidentified.rnIn Ethiopia lack of adequate survey data on premaritalrnpregnancy and fertility have restrained the specific patternsrnfrom being seen clearly. However , there are some other indirectrnevidences that sho-! their increasing t e ndencies . Thus, thisrnresearch attempts t o assess the extent to Io!h i ch adolescentrnpremarital pr egnancy has pervaded 1n the urban settingrn(Awassa). It also examines the relationship between adolescentrnpremarital pregnancy a nd the socio- econom1c , biological,rnbehavioral, and fa mi ly characteristics .rnIn order to analyze and discuss the relationship betweenrnthe risk of having premari t al pregnancy and its determinants,rncross-sectional survey wa s conducted in Awassa . Once the datarnhave been collected, the univariate , bivariate and multivariaternrelati onships I.ere investigated . The major statistical too lrnapplied at different stages of the analysis is the logisticrnreg ression model .The results of the multivariate analysis suggest that usernof contraception at initiation of premarital intercourse,rncommunication with close friends and relatives, current maritalrnstatus, parents ' schooling, agreement to have been engaged inrnfirst premarital sex, educational achievement, knowledge of thernpregnancy risk period of the menstrual cycle and familyrnrel i gion at age 14 are the important predictors of the risk ofrnhaving premari t al pregnancy among sexually active adolescentsrnin Awassa town .rnFinally, the findings disclose that family life educationrnand access to modern methods of contraception are the keyrnstrategic components for programmatic intervention ; andrnsecondary and beyond school girls are the main target groups inrnprograms aim at reducing the present high incidence ofrnp r emarital pregnancy and fer t ility in urban setti ng of Ethiopiarn(Awassa) .
