Information is a corporate resource valuable for socioeconomicrndevelopment. For information to be shared it has tornbe properly processed, stored or preserved and be made readilyrnavailable to users. Information systems and services therefore Endeavour tornharness information for users whose needs are the drivingrnforce for the operations of information institutions.rnKenya National Archives and Documentation Service is onernof the various governmental information systems and subsystems.rnIts archival and records management functions entailrnensuring the proper creation, economic maintenance andrndisposal of public records. As a public national service thernDepartment needs to establish an effective archival andrnrecords management network so as to provide appropriaternservices to users, who include civil servants, academicians,rnstudents and generally members of the public.rnIn providing this information service the Departmentrnrequires to cooperate and coordinate with other informationrnsystems and services guided by and in conformity with thernestablished legal instruments. To further facilitate thernservice, provision the Department needs to adopt informationrntechnology.rnThis study is an attempt to examine how the Departmentrnis meeting these challenges, with recommendations andrnsuggestions that could contribute to the Department's effortrnto develop an effective and efficient archival network inrnKenya within the framework of a national information system.
