In developing countries the demand for reliable andrnadequate information in general and populationrninformation in particular has increased more than everrnfor purposes of development planning, and for formulatingrnand monitoring populationrnEthiopia is no exception.rnFrom the surveys and interviews carried out for thisrnstudy. it became evident that establishment of a nationalrnpopulation information support system that can collect.rnorganize and process such information to meet usersrnrequirements had become crucial to development planningrnin the country .rnAn attempt has been made to assess users of populationrninformation (their information needs. the sources theyrnused. their information seeking behavior, etc.) and thernexisting support facilities. Interviews, onsite study.rnreviewing of relevant documents and questionnaire surveyrnwere the methods employed for the purpose of data andrnfact collectionrn. The results of the survey generally indicated that usersrnhave problems in timely access to reliable. and adequaternTo provide a conceptual and structural framework for thernestablishmnt of a population information support system .rnthe study proposesrnnetworkrnand elaborates a populationrninformation (POPINET) to be established.rnproviding a better foundation f o r the information supportrnsystem. Use of GIS in population activities andrnpopulation project ion support system with specialrnemphasis on urban -regional planning and the developmentrnof related databases are proposed and discussed .rn Recommendations to enhance the level of populationrninformation support and recommendations specific to thernpopulation information network (POPINET) are presented.rn-
