The researcher conducted a study on The Appraisal of Practicing Media Freedom of Expression in Light of Proclamation 590/2008: The case of Ethiopian Herald Newspaper. The study emphasized how the practice of freedom of expression is applied in the newspaper in light of proclamation 590/2008. And to reach out or destine the findings, the study used different methods. In addition to this, the researcher used methodology embraced the case study of under the research design to further get a deep understanding, underpinning conducting research, as well as to conduct the purposive sampling. There were primary and secondary data incorporated in the study. These data were administered under the qualitative methods. Under the primary data, focus group interviews with journalists of the newspaper, interviews with editors of the same newspaper were involved in the study. The sampling size of the journalists was fifteen from the Ethiopian Herald newspaper, and all the seven editors of Ethiopian Herald newspaper were included in the primary study. In the secondary data, editorial policies and codes of conduct of the newspaper were administered in line with the Proclamation 590/2008. The main objective of this study was to understand how press freedom is practiced in the newspapers in light of the national government administration. The results indicated that journalists and editors were under the circumstances of being abandoned and left unguaranteed by the Proclamation 590/2008, and the Ethiopian government. The study also found that journalists were jailed, intimidated, and grabbed their recording materials by officials. Even, organizations that gave journalists information were given warnings by the Prime Minister's office for exposing information. The editorial policy of the Ethiopian Herald did not work on its mission and purpose. Journalists of these media were found censored by the name of being assigned to work on â€œreporting on image building of the nationâ€, prohibiting other governmental criticisms. Accordingly, authoritarian press theory was conveniently administered with this research findings.
