This study was conducted to explore effectiveness of ‘Children’s Right Pictorial Booklet’rnin awareness raising of children on child rights. Thus it employed reception analysis ofrnchildren with an objective to find out the meaning children make out of the magazine andrnhow they identify themselves with the stories in the magazine.rnIn the focus group interviews it was also found out that the main place where thernmagazine is consumed is in class rooms and in homes of the respondents. It was alsornevident that most of the respondents do not read the magazines purposely. In this study itrnwas also found out that children’s reading habit of the magazine is affected by variousrnfactors like children’s lack of knowledge about the magazines availability in schoolrnlibrary and those who knew, only went to library to study.rnIn the focus group interview, the main themes of the magazines that are read byrnrespondents are compared to the meaning the respondents make out of the magazine.rnHence it was found out that respondents understood the intended meaning transmitted byrnthe magazine.rnIt was also learned that all respondents between the ages of 7-9 like the magazine for itsrncontent, Child rights, while respondents between the ages of 13-15 like the magazine forrnits pictorial and narrative presentation that makes it entertaining and educative. It wasrnalso found out that children between the ages of 13-15 have a better understanding of thernstory told and the pictorial presentation than children between the ages of 7-9. The focusrngroup interview has also been found useful in identifying how children, in terms ofrngender vary in their interpretation of messages. Generally it was found out that there arerndifferent factors that affect children’s reading habit of the magazine and the meaningrnmaking of respondents varies mainly due to age and gender.
