Background: One to two third of operated patients in low-income countries acquire surgical siterninfections, which is nine times higher when it is compared to high – resource countries.rnIdentifying the incidence and risk factors that contribute for surgical site infection followingrncesarean delivery is a step ahead for preventing and reducing the problem. Nonetheless, therndistribution of the problem in Addis Ababa, where the rate of cesarean delivery is relatively highrncompared to other parts of the country, is under investigated. Objective: The aim of this study isrnto assess the incidence of surgical site infection among CDs and factors associated with it inrnselected government hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2019. Method: A hospital-basedrnprospective cohort study design was employed to follow 175 women, who gave birth by CD inrnselected government hospitals in Addis Ababa, from March 11 – April 19, 2019. Conveniencernsampling method was used to select study units from the randomly selected hospitals.rnDescriptive statistics were run for determining rate of CD SSI. Presence and degree ofrnassociation between outcome and independent variables was computed through bivariate logisticrnregression analysis. Factors that had ≤ 0.2 significance level in the bivariate logistic regressionrnanalysis was considered in the multivariable logistic regression analysis. Result: From 166rnparticipants who completed 30 day follow-up, 25 (15%) of the participants developed SSI. Age,rngestational age, and duration of operation showed a significant association with the outcomernvariable with AOR (95%CI) of [(AOR = 1.504, 95% CI: (1.170 – 1.933))], [(AOR = 0.019, 95%rnCI: (0.001 – 0.291))], and [(AOR = 1.108, 95% CI: (1.025 – 1.197))] respectively. Conclusionrnand recommendation: SSI rate is higher in this study. Certain associations may be lost due tornsmall sample size. Further interventional studies with vast sample size are recommended.rnEnhanced regulation of infection control policy, implementation of improved surgicalrntechniques, and persistent hand hygiene among respective stakeholders can avert the condition.
