Background: According to the world health organization, youth age group encompassesrnbetween 15-24 years (1). Recent estimates indicate that 17.0% of the global population, 20.0%rnof Sub-Saharan Africa and 17.9% of Ethiopian population is composed of youth aged 15-24rnyears. In Ethiopia, the sexual and reproductive health of young people has become a majorrnpublic concern due to a high prevalence of STIs like HIV/AIDS among young people. rnObjective: The objective of this study was to assess reproductive health needs of youth in BulernHora town rnMethos and material: The community based quantitative cross sectional survey was conductedrnamong 422 youth in Bule Hora town, Southern Oromia Region from September 2011 to mayrn2012. Data collection method was interview administered with structured questionnaires onlyrnfor illegible participants. rnResult and discussion: A total of 422 households were visited in three kebeles of which only 394rn(93.4%) agreed to be interviewed. Generally mass media were the major source of informationrnon the sexual maturation and STD/HIV. Out of the study subject 140(35.5%) of them hadrnreported that there is pressure from their peers to have premarital sex and 331 (84%) reportedrntaht there is no support from their family members not to have premarital sex. As it was revealedrnby logistic regression age, and marital status were found to be the main predictors, rnindependently and negatively associated with sexual activities. But sex (being a female) wasrnindependently and positively associated with sexual activities.According to this study femalesrnhave more risk of sexual engagement compared to males. The proportion of youth who ever usedrnmodern contraceptives did not go parallel with their knowledge of methods. Also after controllingrnfor confounding variables logistic regression show that living patterns (living with both family)rnwas found to be the main predictors, independently and negatively associated with use of modernrncontraceptive. Despite having all these health problems only, 47.6% of them had visited publicrnhealth institutions. rnConclusion and recommendation: Generally there were reproductive health problems like lackrnof adequate information, and the existence of risk sexual and RH behaviours, inappropraternhealth service utilization and socio cultural factors affecting youth reproductive health. Finally, rnprograms that comprise both promotional activities and reproductive health services that couldrnserve the hard to reach youth should be designed and implemented as a matter of priority.
