Introduction: A woman’s preferences, practice and tolerance for various methods attribute varyrnaccording to the type of relations and other aspects of her life. The discrepancy between fertilityrnpreferences and contraceptive practice is regarded as an indicator of unmet demand for familyrnplanning. So far, it is explained that there is alarming increase in population. Ethiopia is one ofrnthe highest ranking countries in reproductive health risk worldwide with a maternal mortalityrnratio 673 per 100,000 deliveries.rnObjective: To assess factors determining preference and practice of modern contraceptive usernamong women of reproductive age groups at Shire Endaslasie town, Tigray Region, NorthernrnEthiopiarnMethod: A Community based cross – sectional study designs were employed on 367 samplernwomen of reproductive age groups in Shire Endaslasie town in 2011. Stratified samplingrntechniques were used to select the study subjects. The sample size has been obtained by a singlernpopulation proportion formula. Three kebeles were selected randomly from all five kebeles in therntown. The required sample size was obtained from the sum of all sample population in eachrnkebeles or stratum using systematic random sampling technique. Krnthrnwas calculated from eachrnselected kebeles to get the sample of each stratum. After developing a structured questionnaire,rnpretest was under taken on 10% of the study subjects one week before data collection i.e. 37rnmothers on similar and non-selected community. Data was collected from February 01/2011 torn21/2011 February days and 15 voluntary kebele oriented outreach workers and above 10 graderndata collectors were assigned after appropriate modification of the questionnaire have been done.rnThen, data was collected through face to face interview using structured questionnaire.rnData-entry, cleaning and statistical analysis was done using Version 16 SPSS soft ware. Prior tornthe study, approval of ethical clearance was obtained from Addis Ababa University, College ofrnhealth sciences, Department of Nursing and Midwifery and Mekelle Regional health Bureau.rnResult: A total of 367 study participants were approached; of these 294 (80.1%) respondent usernof MCMs but 73 (19.9%) not use of MCMs. Reason for using MCMs the majority of them 170rn(57.8%) for child spacing and 112(38.1%) for preventing unwanted pregnancy. Reason for notrnusing MCMs most respondent don’t have sexual partner at present 25 (34.2%).rnConclusion and Recommendation: This study have clearly described that women use MCMsrnafter they had higher number children and less desire to limit family size. It recommended thatrnstrong behavioral change intervention targeting the high fertility desire of women and MCMsrnutilization is needed.
