Background: Bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis are major health problemsrnassociated with gynecologic complicationsrnObjective: To determine the prevalence bacterial vaginosis and vulovvaginal candidiasis amongrnwomen complaining genital tract infection at SPHMMC and FGAEMC Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.rnMethods: A health facility based cross sectional study was conducted from February,2016 tornJuly, 2016. Demographic variables were collected using a structured questionnaire. Two vaginalrnswab specimens were collected from each participant. For diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis ,gramrnstain Nugent score was used. All fungal and bacterial pathogens were isolated and characterizedrnby employing conventional techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile of bacterial isolatesrnwas Performed using disc diffusion technique as per the standard Kirby-Bauer method. Thernresults were analyzed using SPSS version 20.rnResult: The overall vaginal infection was 70% .The overall prevalence of bacterial vagnosis wasrn102(48.6%).Bacterial vaginosis was statistically significant associated with odor (p=0.007),rnfrequency vaginal bathing (p=0.045) and frequency of changing of pants (p=0.01). The overallrnprevalence of vulvovaginal candiasis was 87(41.4%).Vulvovaginal candidiasis was statisticallyrnsignificantly associated with illiterate patients (p=0.021), number of life time male sex partnerrn(p=0.037), number of sex partner in the last 12 months (p=0.001) and with previous bacterialrnvaginosis (p= 0.004). A total 151 bacterial isolates were recovered, of which 105(69.5%) of thernisolates were gram negative and 46 (30.5%) isolates were gram positive bacteria. The overallrndrug resistance rates of gram negative bacterial isolates ranged from 14.3% to Amikacin 77.3%rnto Tetracycline. The overall drug resistance rates of gram positive bacterial isolates ranged fromrn0% to vancomycin and 67.4% to penicillin.rnConclusion and recommendation: Both bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis wasrnhigh and hence many such types of studies are recommended to be conducted across the country.rnKeywords: Bacterial Vaginosis and Fungi isolate
