Background: - Hypertension is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raisedrnpressure due to increased cardiac output and/ or increased peripheral resistance, putting themrnunder increased stress. Hypertension imposes stresses on many organs like heart and kidney.rnHowever studies that show the effect of hypertension on the lung are limited.rnObjective: - the aim of this study was to assess pulmonary function status of hypertensivernpatients aged 30-64 years at Zewditu Memorial Hospital, 2016rnMethods: - the study design was hospital based comparative cross sectional and the samplingrntechnique was convenient sampling. A total of 61 cases and 61 controls aged 30-64 years thatrnfulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected. Computerized spirometry was done in all casesrn(hypertensive patients) and controls (nonhypertensive) that were either attendants of patients orrnpersons that came for routine medical checkup. The study was conducted from August 20, 2016rnto September 25, 2016rnResult: - the values of FVC, FEV1 and FEF25-75%rnwere 3.52±1.02 liters, 2.97±0.89 liters,rn3.34±1.3 liters/second in hypertensive patients and 4.31±0.82 liters, 3.54±0.7 liters, 3.94±1.09rnliters/second in controls respectively. These values were significantly lower (p0.05). Restrictive pulmonaryrndefect was dominant in hypertensive patients. FEV1% which was 85%±7%in hypertensivernpatients and 82%±5% in controls was significantly higher (p
