Exploring Perceived Benefits Challenges And Opportunities Of Group Therapy For Clients With Substance Use Disorder In Zewditu Memorial Hospital Addis Ababa Ethiopia A Qualitative Study
Background: Studies have showed that even in high income countries, substance use rndisorders is a significant threat to the health, social, and economic ground of families, rncommunities and nations. This situation might be worse in Ethiopia because of related to rnhealth care, joblessness, peer influence, social and cultural bases. It needs providing the rnbest available evidence on the management of substance use disorders. The majority of rnSUD special treatment is in group format, with open-enrolling group being most rncommon. Even though, so many studies show us the effectiveness and benefits of group rntherapy to the recovery from substance use disorder. However, in Ethiopia, there is no rnresearch exists that captures the experience and perception of service users that receivedrnin/out patient group therapy treatment. rnMethods: This qualitative study explored the perceived benefits, challenges, rnopportunities and benefit of group therapy for clients with substance use disorders for in-rnpatients and out-patients service at Zewditu Memorial Hospital in addiction center. Data rnwas gathered from 10 participants and using semi- structured interviews. The interviews rnwere conducted in Amharic, transcribed and then translated in to English. The data were rnanalyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: It was found out that participants recognized that group therapy was rnimportant treatment modality for their recovery and relapse prevention's. Participants rnreported attending sessions regularly. Reported benefits include opportunities to confront rnan important issue in their problems areas, learn from one another, develop a sense of rnhope, togetherness, sharing their feelings, thoughts, ideas altering their thought pattern rnand also they mentioned acquired skills to prevent relapse like problem solving skills, rnimproving their communication skills and re-build their family, social relationship which rnalso were reported to give help in resisting craving, abstaining from using and preventing rnrelapse. Reported challenges related with session duration and frequency. rnConclusion and recommendation: rnThis report identified that group therapy for substance use disorders is feasible, and rnparticipants reported several benefits from attending the group therapy. It is a brief, rnmanualized, low cost intervention which can be introduced in other centers in Ethiopia rnand other low income countries. Further studies are recommended on the long term rnimpact of the therapy.
